Motivated by mercy

Prayer, fasting or giving – there's no easy option here. It reminds me of choosing subjects at school – physics, chemistry, French – they all looked hard to me. But that was the point, which I never really understood at the time. Hard meant I had to put in the effort to achieve success and I wasn't prepared to give of myself. Hopefully now I have a better attitude but it still comes down to the same thing – how much am I prepared to sacrifice my time (to pray), my desires (to fast) and my needs (to give)?

What can motivate me to act in this way? Paul's encouragement to the Christians in Rome was this, "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship" (Rom 12:1). During this short season, let's worship God, not by singing songs but by sacrificing our time and desires, and then give as he directs.
