The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth!

Who decides what is true about us? God! Our lives are transformed when we find out what the truth is – what God says about us – and then make a deliberate, conscious choice to believe it.

Sometimes we get this the wrong way round – we think that we need to 'clean up our act', get our behaviour sorted out, and then we'll start to believe that we really are children of God, loved, accepted, free from sin. But the reality is that when we start to believe what God says about us – the truth – then we start to find our self-worth, security, significance and acceptance in God's truth!

Jesus said: "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:31-32). Being Christians means we are people who live out our lives by faith. We acted in faith when we first responded to Jesus – we turned to him by faith for salvation, forgiveness of our sins and eternal life. Now we continue to walk in this journey with Him by faith, which means choosing daily to believe that what He says is true. And we don't do this in our own strength, but Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will "guide you into all truth" (John 16:13) and it is also the Spirit who empowers us to change!

It's our faith that pleases God (Hebrews 11:6). God's role is to BE the truth – Jesus said, "I am the truth" (John 14:6) – and our responsibility is to respond to the truth and believe it. We don't need to wonder if God is good or if God loves us; we choose to believe God's Word, which tells us He IS good and He DOES love us. We aren't transformed by trying harder, but by grace, through faith. And faith is simply believing what is already true.

Of course, there are often times when we our feelings don't match up, but feelings come and go, while truth never changes, no matter how we feel. People, situations, circumstances can all change and disappoint us, but Jesus never fails us. Why? Because he is the unchanging truth! We need to know the truth, choose to believe the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, and then we will be transformed!
