I love eating!

I love eating! I love the smell of the food as it sits on the plate (although not for long!); I love the taste of food and the sensation it gives; the enjoyment of sharing it with friends and family and the feeling of satisfaction after I've finished. God made food for our enjoyment. There are many references to it in the Bible, culminating at the end of time with the most lavish banquet you could ever imagine. It seems I'm not alone, with the myriad cookery programmes on the TV. Whole channels are given over to eating.

So why on earth would anyone want to fast?

Fasting food is a spiritual discipline highlighted in the Bible many times. It is a time when we can say to God: You are more important than food. It's a time when we can stop obsessing about what to eat and what to cook and instead spend time with our Maker. It's a time when we can draw aside and examine our priorities, to wait on God for direction, to worship and reflect on what God has done in our lives.

Even if you've never fasted before, why not start with missing just one meal, get some time alone with God and give Him your undivided attention? It might just change your life.
