Christians are in a war. The Bible is very clear that we have a real enemy who is out to deceive and destroy us – the devil is described as "the father of lies" (John 8:44) who "prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8). The Bible is also very clear that the devil is certainly not more powerful than Jesus. He's not even more powerful than those who follow Christ – us! But he can disarm and disempower Christian believers through his deceit and lies.
We must not dismiss the threat of the enemy and imagine that we are somehow invincible to the devil's schemes – we're not! But likewise, we mustn't live in fear of the devil, giving him power over us that he has no right to, because unlike other wars, we already know who wins the war we're in!
There is no comparison between Jesus and the devil. We can sometimes fall into the trap of looking at God and Satan with a kind of 'ying/yang' mentality, as though there's an equal battle between good and evil. But that is not the truth. There is only one God, one Creator, one source of power – and there was only ever going to be one winner, one victor: God!
We must understand that in the spiritual realm there has never been any doubt as to who would come out on top in this battle. Jesus came to destroy the devil's work (1 John 3:8) and "triumphed over them by the cross" (Colossians 2:15). He has given us the weapons we need to live in the light of this triumph.
In Ephesians 6:10-17 we read that we have been equipped with the full armour of God. When we know the 'genuine article' – the truth that Jesus has the victory and that we are victorious in Him – then we can spot any counterfeit the enemy would throw at us; when we know the truth, we won't fall prey to the devil's key tactic of deception.
The truth is that we are in a war, but Jesus has already secured the victory. He has won! And we are victorious in Him! How will you arm yourself with the truth today?
