- About us
6th October 2013
This morning we started our new Church is_____ preach series, during which we'll be looking at what the Bible says about God's people and His plan for them since the beginning of time.
Before the foundation of the world, God chose us. He has always planned to have a people to call His own, as we see when He told Abram (later known as Abraham) that He will make him “a great nation” and will bless him and bless others through him (Gen. 12:1-3). Likewise, the Bible tells us that we – Christians – have been chosen to be a blessed people, to be a blessing to those around us, and to be free of anything that would hold us back from following Jesus.
When God chose Abram, it changed everything in Abram's world. God made him a promise that in human terms sounded ridiculous – that in their very old age, Abraham and Sarah (who was barren) would have a son and be made into this great nation.
This wasn't just about one man and one woman, but was part of God's big story to have a people belonging to Him: this people is compared in number to "the dust of the earth" (Gen. 13:16) and the stars in the sky (Gen. 15:5). We weren't saved by God to just have our own individual relationship with Him, but to be part of His family, the Church. We are included in the promise to Abraham (see Romans 9) and so we are are blessed people, who are to be a conduit of God's blessing to others and to live in freedom (Galatians 5:1).
