There is a clear expectation from Jesus that his disciples would be coming to God with fasting. For example, Matthew 6:16-18 gives some clear direction on how we are to go about fasting: I would particularly draw your attention to the first word – "when" (not "if").
The passage tells us not to boast about how we are fasting, but I will share some of the practices I have followed in the hope that they will be helpful. I am not a very regular 'faster' but I can think of several particularly difficult situations that have caused me to come to God with fasting. The result has always been breakthrough.
Regularly abstaining from food on Saturdays for a season has worked very well for me, particularly when a few of us have been doing it together and we have been able to schedule to meet for prayer on the Saturdays.
With this routine it's easy for me to lose focus during the rest of the week, so it has also been useful to find a more regular reminder and prompt for prayer. For me that can be through leaving out tea and coffee. I drink quite a bit throughout the day, so this enables me to regularly remind myself of the season we're in.
It will be different for each of us but this is the sort of routine that I have adopted in the past and through which I have seen God break into very difficult situations.
