Extravagant giving

"Why this waste?" they asked. "This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor." (Matthew 26:8-9)

It never ceases to amaze me what good excuses we human beings come up with once God starts asking us to give! There is some great, practical teaching on giving in the New Testament (e.g. 2 Corinthians 9), and my testimony is, when we apply the Bible's teaching with faith, God blesses and multiplies our generosity. It's a genuine win-win situation.

What I love even more about this passage in Matthew 26, however, is that it is rooted in extravagant worship. Jesus describes what the woman has done as "a beautiful thing" and he adds: "I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."

In this season of sacrificial giving, how great it would be not to start with the question: 'How much can I afford to give?', but instead to be engaged in faith-filled, extravagant giving that furthers the preaching of the gospel around the world, inviting others to worship Jesus too.
