Sound doctrine is absolutely key to our lives. If we put in the right teaching (truth), we get out the right life, but if we put in wrong teaching, we get out the wrong life. Let's explore what this means.
The result of pouring truth into yourself is that your life becomes saturated in and shaped by love. The problem with false teaching is that it has the opposite effect, resulting in lives shaped by selfishness and undermining God's work, which is by faith.
A people who have grasped the wonderful truth of the gospel live in the good of it and are transformed us in genuine, tangible ways. We don't always know what is going on in each other's hearts, but the gospel produces fruit that can be seen, heard and experienced.
The truth shapes our lives, characterising them by love. This love comes from a pure heart, a good conscience and a sincere faith. It is visible through a community that is patient and kind, not envying, boastful, rude or self-seeking, but keeping no record of wrongs, not delighting in evil, protecting, trusting, hoping and always persevering.
This is the goal of sound doctrine: a redeemed people bringing glory to God and reflecting His love not merely in words, but also in action.
