Can you believe that Jonah, a prophet who knew God, tried to run “away from the presence of the Lord”?!
Initially you might think, "Oh Jonah, you silly man, you cant run away from God!" But it's easy for us to sometimes think this too, whether consciously or subconsciously. Actually, I think it's more common than we think, easier than we think and something we've all done!
God might call you to do something or you might sense him trying to do something in our life, and it all gets a little uncomfortable, so you decide to run and hide... Maybe not physically running away like Jonah, but maybe it's more of an internal thing, your heart turns away and hides from the Lord: so externally going through the motions, but internally your heart has become distant from God, maybe through fear, insecurity, disappointment or pain from the past?
In a funny way, when I read this account of Jonah it brings me great security, because it shows me that even if I choose to run from God, he will never leave me. Although at times our hearts might feel distant from him, God is right there!
Through the ups and downs of the rollercoaster of life, it's great to know that we can never escape God – we may try to hide from him, but he will always find us, he always knows where we are!
As it says in Psalm 139: "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there."
Wherever we go, and whatever we go through, God is there!
Reading: Jonah 1:1-3, Psalm 139:7-8
Question: What things make you want to run from God?
Next prayer meetings: Sunday 7am at THC and 7pm at Centre Stage, Bexhill
