Foodbank 5

Hastings Foodbank hits its five-year anniversary on Easter Monday. It was opened by King’s Church on 17 April 2012 with significant support from other churches in the town and has distributed 148,000 tonnes of food during that time, which equates to 354,578 meals.

As Paul Mann mentioned on Sunday, we have seen a 53% increase in demand over the last four months, and so we are asking church members and other churches in the town to take part in the Foodbank 5 campaign: please bring five items of food or five pounds to donate on each of the next five Sundays.

At the moment we particularly need: tinned meat, UHT milk, tinned fruit and veg, teabags, tinned rice pudding and tuna.

Gary Dyer, who is part of the foodbank core team, said: “We are really pleased that over the last five years we have been able to help literally thousands of local people who have found themselves facing a crisis situation, but this is not an anniversary to celebrate – we would prefer it if there wasn’t a need for a foodbank in Hastings at all. We’re very grateful to the people of Hastings and the surrounding areas for their incredible generosity over the last five years.”

Local people are referred to the foodbank by a number of organisations, such as the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, health visiting teams, schools, and housing associations. They can be referred for a variety of reasons, from long-term sickness to low wages and from benefit delays to debt. Many of those referred are in work, but struggling to make ends meet.
