WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT HUMAN TRAFFICKING?
04.04.17 | CHRIS BUNT
Here at King's Church we run a gap year volunteer training course called Impact Hastings. Impact Hastings is for people who want to become courageous Christians – people who want to see something they've never seen before, by doing something they've never done; people who want God to shine through everything they do; people who want to grow. If you're over 18 and ready to grow in God – then this is for you!
Through Impact Hastings you have the opportunity to be a part our lively and dynamic church in the sunny seaside town of Hastings. It’s an exciting time to join us, as we’re currently becoming one church with four venues. You will be serving alongside a diversely gifted leadership team, and receiving training, teaching and input from well respected leaders. You will experience a vast range of church life, seeing people saved and healed, and we’re confident that your view of yourself, of God, of His Church, of mission, of loving people, and so much more will never be the same.
For 2017/18 we have four spaces for Impacters. We are offering 'focus areas' for gap year students who come here, meaning we can really invest in you and help you to develop specific skills – for example, you might be looking to grow specifically in theology, worship, writing/marketing, dance, film, media, social action, or youth/kids work, or you might want to spend a year here doing a bit of everything.
Scroll down to find out more about our focus areas.
Hastings in an exciting place for dance: from stage schools to contemporary arts festivals, our town is home to a thriving creative community. Guy or girl, balletic, jazzy, street or contemporary, dance A-level student or university graduate – if you have a love for dance, a desire to stretch yourself creatively and an excitement to see how God could use your passion in one year, then we would love for you to join us. You’ll work alongside leadership team member Joanna Mutu, who is a qualified dance professional and oversees dance, creativity, Impact and youth at King’s.
Good communication is a vital part of church life. It is a powerful tool to inspire church members to do great exploits for God, to shape how those outside the church think of us, and to lead us into a deeper understanding of the God made us. If you are keen to develop your gifting in this area – specifically in writing – our communications focused Impact year can help kick-start a future career in journalism, media, marketing or press and publicity. You’ll be working alongside leadership team member Natalie Williams, who is an author and former journalist who has worked for national and local newspapers and magazines and heads up communications at King’s.
Our Theology Impact year is perfect for someone who wants to learn how to understand and apply the Bible and how to thinking theologically. Each term will have a different focus and will involve mentoring, guided study and project work. The Theology Impact is led by Andrew Bunt. Andrew studied theology at Durham University (BA) and Biblical Studies at King’s College London (MA), focusing on biblical interpretation and biblical languages (Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic) at both. He teaches regularly at King’s, as well as at other New Ground churches and events and is the author of Who In Heaven’s Name Do You Think You Are?
Worship is our highest calling – it’s what we were made to do. Worship is at the very core of who we are whenever we meet as a church, which is why we invest time, money and training into our worship team – we are developing a culture of excellency and authenticity in our worship, giving God our best. From involvement on Sundays in the band, to prayer meetings, to song-writing, to recording, to administration, to encountering God together – there are lots of exciting things to be involved in at this time if you come to Hastings! You’ll get to spend time with a variety of leaders from our worship team.
Hundreds of children and teens come through our doors every week. We have four thriving Sunday morning kids’ groups, a mid-week parent and toddler group that has grown at an astonishing rate, and a large, dynamic youth group. By spending the year with us focusing on this area, you will be an integral part of all that God is doing in our under 18s, while also developing practical, leadership and administrative skills. You’ll be working with Kate Thurston (kids) and Joanna Mutu (youth), who are both part of the staff team here at King’s, overseeing these areas.
Spend an Impact year in Hastings & St Leonards, the 13th most deprived area in England and Wales, learning more about God’s hear for the poor and vulnerable. You’ll have the opportunity to get involved in a number of projects run by King’s or other churches in the town, such as foodbank, debt advice, anti-modern slavery, soup kitchen, night shelter, education mentoring, welcoming refugees, supporting pregnant women, and more… You’ll work alongside Natalie Williams, co-author of The Myth of the Undeserving Poor and A Church for the Poor, who oversees social action at King’s and works for the national Christian charity Jubilee+..
We have loved beginning to integrate film into many areas of King’s Church life. From Alpha stories and church vision interviews on the website to creative collaborations with performance and worship on Sundays – we’ve seen how God can use multi-media powerfully to impact lives. If you are a budding film-maker with prior experience and skills in filming and editing, we’d love for you to join us for a year as we expand and creatively explore this area of church life further. You’ll work alongside various members of the leadership team.
Over the last decade we have seen 40 Impacters mature in their faith and be shaped and changed from spending a year with us serving on the staff team at King’s Church. As well as advertising specific Impact focus area, we recognise the huge blessing of having Impacters who don’t mind what they do – and are just happy to serve in many different areas and gain experience from a breadth of church life. We love to have servant-hearted people come here to grow, learn and contribute, so we’d love for you to join us. You’ll get to work alongside various members of the leadership team.
While we can offer eight focus areas, we only have four Impact spaces available in total! So get in touch quickly if you’d like to come here.
Please get in contact with us to apply or for an informal chat with our impact leader, Joanna, to find out more: email@example.com
You're welcome to visit us too – let us know if you'd like to come on a Sunday and we’ll take you on a great afternoon out in Hastings, as well as showing you around the church building and introducing you to people.

“Impact has really helped me grow in my walk with God and has really helped with my confidence.”Maddi - Kids and Youth
My name’s Maddi and I came out of college not really knowing what to do next. I felt prompted to do Impact here at King’s. Throughout this year I have been able to do an amazing amount of things, like being able to work alongside the children and youth. I’ve really gained a lot of experience in working with all these groups of under 18s. Impact has really helped me grow in my walk with God and has really helped with my confidence.
“God was in control of everything, from the very beginning.”Elisha (Bulgaria) - Worship and Youth
Well I did Impact because God left a door open for me, which is the best way. Impact year basically saved my life, put it back on the right path. During that gap year I put my principles for my life in order and at the end I knew what is God's will and heart for my life. God was in control of everything, from the very beginning!
“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”Dan Golfin (Hastings)
To be honest with you, I’ve wanted to do Impact ever since I heard of it in 2012. It sounded amazing, spending a year serving others and growing in God. Having finally had the opportunity this year, I’ve been absolutely enjoying it. I’ve had the challenge of balancing it out with a job I got at the same time, something I wouldn’t recommend, but I’ve been learning so many lessons from my mistakes and successes. I definitely do not regret this year, it’s been such a blessing. If you want a challenging but rewarding year full of opportunities to step out of your comfort zone and really grow closer to God, Impact is definitely for you!
“I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Phillipians 4:12-13
“I’m really grateful I've had the opportunity to spend an Impact year at King’s Church Hastings.”Sian Francis-Cox
I’m really grateful I've had the opportunity to spend an Impact year at King’s Church Hastings. I never thought about taking a gap year, but here I've been able to explore my interests and giftings, and above all to learn more about who God is. In the week, I specialise in communications at King’s, writing news and blogs with the help of experienced mentors. I’ve also learnt plenty by moving to a new town and I've met some wonderful people.
“It’s an amazing year! I’ve been able to delve deeper into God and all that He’s got for me!”Tamara Brunton
It’s an amazing year! I’ve been able to delve deeper into God and all that He’s got for me! The training has been so beneficial – I particularly loved going to Centre Parcs in January with all the UK Impact bases! I’ve been stretched in areas I never thought I’d try out. I’ve learnt so much about who I am as a person, who I am as a child of God, and what gifts and skills He’s given me! It’s been hard, challenging, incredible, deep and so much fun!
“This year I’ve grown in God immeasurably!”Zoe Masters
This year I’ve grown in God immeasurably – every aspect of it has been amazing and God has reached in to every area of my life throughout the year! I know I’ve made life-long friends, and been changed in a way that will affect the rest of my life.
